Girona managed a well-deserved and hard-fought win at Montillivi over the historical Athletic and the locals, in their debut in the First Division, are only two points behind the last team placed to classify for European tournaments.
The 'red-and-white' team were far better from the starting whistle and Stuani gave Girona the lead in the fifth minute converting a penalty after a tackle by young Andoni López on Maffeo. Girona's right-back should have scored what could have been one of the most spectacular goals of this week, however, his powerful right kick struck the post.
After the break, Girona continued to dominate the game and sealed the victory with Stuani's second goal. The Uruguayan striker found the back of the net after a brilliant cross from the right side by Portu.
Pablo Machin line-up was Bono; Ramalho, Bernardo, Juanpe; Maffeo, Granell, Pere Pons, Mojica; Portu (Aleix García, 90'), Borja (Timor, 83') and Stuani (Olunga, 82').
Girona's next game will see them face Sevilla at Sanchez Pizjuan this coming Sunday (12 pm).
