June 4th, 2017 is a date that will be stamped onto the memory of a club and its fans that made history. Girona FC has secured a well-deserved promotion to the 1st Division and will play in Spanish football’s top category for the first time in its history.
After four difficult years in which the club stood at the doors of promotion on two occasions only to be thwarted at the last minute and one season that almost saw them being relegated to Division 2B, it has been this, the fourth year when Girona FC secured their ticket to travel nationwide to face the best teams in Spain, and possibly the world.
The match itself was the least principal issue on the day. The very chance that was snatched from Girona by Real Zaragoza, as well as Almeria, Lugo and Osasuna, was returned on this occasion. Both Girona and Zaragoza knew that they needed a point to hit their targets and signed a peace deal just after the referee’s whistle signalled the start of the match. The scoreboard remained unchanged throughout the match and Girona FC was finally proclaimed a First Division team.
The starting eleven Pablo Machín presented and who will go down in history were: Bounou; Aday, Juanpe, Ramalho, Alcalá, Mujica; Granell, Eloi Amagat, Borja García; Portu, Sandaza.
